Australian Police Arrest Two Men in Grandfather Kidnapping, Murder Case

(MENAFN) Australian authorities have detained two men in connection with the alleged abduction and killing of an elderly Sydney man who investigators believe was taken by mistake, according to reports. The arrests came a day after human remains were discovered on the outskirts of the city.

Chris Baghsarian, an 85-year-old widower, was reportedly seized from his home in North Ryde during an early morning raid on 13 February. Police have indicated that he was not the intended target of the operation, which local reports suggest may have been directed at a family allegedly linked to organised crime.

On Wednesday, officers arrested two suspects, aged 24 and 29, for questioning. Forensic examinations later confirmed that remains found near a golf course belonged to Baghsarian. Investigators have said they expect to formally charge both men, who were previously known to police for minor offences.

Authorities also signalled that additional arrests are possible, stating they believe more individuals were involved in the suspected kidnapping and killing.

Baghsarian’s family expressed relief following news of the arrests and asked the media to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

In the immediate aftermath of the abduction, police publicly appealed for those responsible to release the elderly man, noting that he suffered from health conditions and required daily medication. Officials said they were "a million percent confident" that the wrong person had been taken and stressed that neither Baghsarian nor his relatives had any connection to organised crime.

As footage showing an injured Baghsarian circulated online, his family described the situation as deeply distressing.

"We are struggling to make sense of the fact that he has been taken and that our family has been caught up in something that has nothing to do with us," they said in a statement shortly after the kidnapping.
